10 Television Shows That Overstayed Their Welcome

8. Stargate SG-1

Stargate-SG-1

A continuation of the 1994 feature film, SG-1 ran for ten seasons between 1997 and 2007 and in the process launched a franchise that in included two spinoff shows, Atlantis which was followed by Universe as well as an animated show called infinity. By the time it had wrapped up its run the show had become the longest running science fiction series in the history of American television, despite this however there was an inescapable feeling with each passing year that the show was no longer as good as it once was. The first seven seasons ran smoothly SG-1 was funny and entertaining, the Goa'uld presented a real and unnerving threat and the episodes in which they did not feature were just as fun to watch due to a combination of excellent chemistry within the main cast and compelling, witty writing. From here however things took a downward turn, the Goa'uld were all but wiped out and lead star Richard Dean Anderson decided to take a back seat for season 8 before leaving the show completely. It does seem like the producers put a real effort into retaining the quality of the show; Ben Browder and Claudia Black were imported from fellow Sci-Fi show Farscape, along with veteran actor Beau Bridges as the new leader of Stargate command following the exit of Anderson. The team were also given a new threat in the form of the Ori, a logical direction to take as they were an extension of the ancients a long running plot thread in the series. Despite this valiant attempt for some reason it just did not seem to click. SG-1 did not become a bad show in its later years but things were never quite the same without Richard Dean Anderson or the Goa'uld. Stargate SG-1 should have come to a end when Anderson decided that he wanted to leavem by this point the fight with the Goa'uld had all but come to an end and the spinoff series Atlantis had started. Instead of attempting to revitalise a show that had concluded it story the producers should have focused their attention on Atlantis, if they had then perhaps that show would not have got the abrupt ending that it did.
